Volunteers

Students in VITA is a growing UC Davis student organization that is dedicated to providing free tax filing services to low income families and individuals in the Davis community.

Our volunteers and interns fill the following roles:

TAX PREPARER- Work one-on-one with taxpayers using intake forms and computer software to complete and electronically file their tax returns. This helps working families receive all tax refunds and credits for which they are eligible.Skills Needed: No tax law experience necessary. Basic computer literacy, attention to detail, customer service skillsTraining: Tax law and TaxSlayer classes or self-study and a passing score on the IRS Certification Exams are required for all VITA Site Tax Preparers.
SCREENER- Assist tax filers to complete the IRS intake sheet and ensure that the taxpayer has brought all necessary documents prior to having their tax returns prepared.Skills Needed: Customer Service skills and high level of organization.Training: Tax law and TaxSlayer classes or self-study and a passing score on the IRS Certification Exams are required for all VITA Site Screeners.
GREETER- Welcome tax filers to the VITA site during the tax season; ensure that tax filers have all the information needed to complete their tax returns; assist site coordinators with administrative tasks at the VITA site.Skills Needed: Customer Service skillsTraining: Tax law and TaxSlayer classes or self-study and a passing score on the IRS Certification Exams are required for all VITA Site Greeters.
QUALITY REVIEWER- Review tax returns prepared by a tax preparer, thoroughly checking if information is correct. Answer questions that the tax preparer may have.

Skills Needed: Knowledge of tax laws required.

Training: Provided by Site-Coordinators
