“Joining VITA was the best decision I made in college. Never did I think I could find an internship that appealed to my passion for community service and interest in professional development until I learned about Students in VITA. There is nothing more gratifying than not only giving the families we serve the resources they need to understand their taxes and improve their financial situations but also providing VITA interns the responsibilities and challenges they need to grow as professionals. Through this internship, I not only expanded my knowledge of tax, but also my skills in planning, engaging with clients, and leading others. I am privileged to work with and learn from ambitious and driven peers, some who are not pursuing accounting or business, but truly enjoy the work they do for our clients. I am excited for what the upcoming tax season entails, including the opportunity to reinforce relationships with returning clients, and making VITA the leading tax preparation service for members of the Davis and Sacramento communities.”

Hobbies: cooking, hiking, K-Pop, Zumba

“When I first heard about VITA, I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn how to file taxes while giving back to the community, and it did just that and so much more! Through this internship, I have not only gained tax knowledge but also developed my soft skills and professionalism. VITA taught me that filing taxes is not as solitary of a task as it sounds. The entire tax process pushes me to improve my communication and problem-solving skills. To top it off, I got to meet a wonderful bunch of people; the clients were a pleasure to work with and I would not have met a friendlier and more eager-to-help crew of interns anywhere else! I am certain my experiences at VITA will positively influence my life and career choices for years to come.”

“I have always been interested in business but I never knew which particular field I wanted to work in. I thought VITA would be a great way to introduce me to the financial field so I decided to go to the information night and apply. Before I started VITA, I knew nothing about taxes but after attending workshops and performing tax returns, I found myself more comfortable with the tax software and laws. This experience has also improved my communication skills, as we have to speak to several clients at the tax site. College makes it easy for everyone to get caught up in school and other extracurricular, but it is always important to remember to give back to the local community. VITA is a great opportunity to not only learn how to file taxes which is a skill needed in the real world but a great way to help those in the local area.”

Hobbies/interests: Attend music festivals/concerts, travel, hang out with my friends, gym, eat, binge watch shows

“Prior to joining VITA my junior year, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in accounting but I wasn’t exactly sure what specific field in accounting I was interested in. When I found out about VITA, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to explore tax while being able to gain some professional work experience and give back to the community. Aside from learning an abundance of tax knowledge, I learned how to communicate effectively with clients and peers in a professional setting as well as how to solve problems independently through research. One of my favorite parts about VITA is that it continuously challenged me both technically and professionally and I would find that there was always something new to learn during every tax site.”

Hobbies: Playing soccer or badminton, spending time with friends, drinking boba, listening to music

“The reason I joined VITA last year was so that I could give back to the Davis Community. Entering my Junior year, I realized that this community had given so much to me and that it was now time to return the favor, and that’s when VITA found me! Without a doubt, I will remember being involved in VITA as one of the most meaningful times of my college career. VITA has taught me many practical life lessons ranging from how to file your tax return, to being able to clearly and compassionately communicate with the members of your community. Furthermore, VITA has given me a chance to improve my leadership skills and meet new people on a professional and personal level throughout the local community. Being a member of VITA is much more than learning about taxes, VITA provides the opportunity to become a more involved member of your community and contribute to a cause that is bigger than any one individual!”

Hobbies: snowboarding, playing football, and enjoying a bike ride around Davis.

“As someone who loves to be proactive with their time, I am always looking for different things to do or join. When I heard that VITA was opening up board applications to non-members for the Marketing position, I went for it thinking it was the perfect opportunity to utilize my marketing skills and ideas while also being able to give back to the community. By being on this year’s board, I hope to strengthen my leadership skills and learn through collaborating with my peers. I am most excited to help VITA gain more exposure so that the Davis community knows about and can utilize the great service this organization offers. I am also excited to get some hands-on experience being a certified intern.”

“I joined VITA because I want to serve the community and they had a position opened that was related to my interest, design. I wanted to practice my skills in graphic design. I am most excited about working with everyone, meeting new people, learning from each other and creating professional designs.”

Jolan Chen

Lead Intern

Fourth Year

“When I first transferred to Davis, I was looking for clubs that included volunteer work and an opportunity that would help me find my career interest. I was exposed to VITA through the class introductions. As an intern, I learned tax terminology that I didn’t think I would need to know until I graduated college and how big of an impact this program is to some of our local families. When I see a smile on their face after we have finished filing, it was rewarding because my client was happy. VITA has pushed me to grow professionally, by speaking to clients and utilizing tax software, and taught me to continuously improve my skills so I can give back to the community whenever I can. Although I decided not to pursue accounting, VITA has taught me valuable skills that I can transfer to my future career; likewise, giving me the necessary skills to volunteer again.”

Hobbies: reading, trying new restaurants, perfecting my instant ramen dish, and catching up on Grey’s Anatomy.

Being an intern has honed my professional communication skills and allowed me to work with some wonderful people. The experience of helping clients through VITA has been incredibly satisfying, and has given meaning to my college career. Furthermore, VITA has given me direction for life after college and strengthened my resolve to continue contributing to the community. I am beyond excited to continue next year!”

Jackie Escareno

Lead Intern

Fourth Year

“I joined Davis VITA because I loved that the internship gives back to the community by assisting low-income families with free tax preparation. Coming from a low-income family, I have witnessed first hand how difficult it can be during tax season to find a low cost, efficient tax preparer. The client’s gratitude when we prepare their free tax return is extremely rewarding and I enjoy being able to put the knowledge that I learn in my economics classes to a positive use. Davis VITA has taught me tax laws and has improved my communication and team working skills. It has opened up an entire networking system for me while being surrounded by driven individuals with similar interests as mine.”

Hobbies: hanging out with family and friends, working out, traveling, thrifting, trying new things to eat, and watching shows on Netflix

Steffie Guan

“I joined VITA my junior year and I’m glad I did ever since. I initially applied to learn more about preparing taxes and to give back to the Davis community, but VITA has given me so much more. Getting to know all our clients and seeing them walk out with a smile has been extremely rewarding. Since then I’ve become committed to offering only the best quality service. My experience with VITA has not only given me practical tax knowledge, but also the communication and leadership skills necessary for a career in the tax field. I’ve developed professionally and gained a network of supportive, hard-working peers. I’m grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing to serve my community while meeting new people along the way.”

Janet Lu

Lead Intern

Second Year

“At the beginning of my freshman year, I heard about VITA through a friend and I was instantly intrigued because I wanted to improve my professionalism while being able to connect with my community. During my time as a tax-preparing intern, I improved my communication skills as well as use tax knowledge, while learning how to think quickly on my feet when working with clients. VITA has taught me a vast amount of knowledge that I will take with me throughout my college and professional career. I am very grateful for the connections and priceless experiences that I have gained through VITA. Before VITA, I was unsure if I wanted to continue a career in the business field. But, after finishing my first year of the internship, I realized that there was a lot of potential for me in this field. I am extremely grateful that I was given the opportunity to be a VITA intern.”

Fourth Year

“This is my fourth year taking part in Students in VITA. I initially joined the program because I would like to engage in community services and explore the tax accounting field. Throughout the program, I have gained valuable income tax knowledge and improved my communication and leadership skills by exercising hands-on tax preparations, communicating with clients, working with other interns, and more. This practical professional internship opportunity guided me to find my interest in tax accounting and assisted me to land another tax internship at PwC. In addition, I have built strong relationships with kindhearted people who are very earnest and supportive about my life besides school and work. Joining Students in VITA is one of my best college experiences.”
