“As my time in college ends, I find that joining Students in VITA was the best decision I made. While I was uncertain about what career to pursue, I joined the organization as an intern during my sophomore year. Throughout the internship, I encountered grateful smiles from clients as I completed their tax returns and forged strong bonds with fellow organization members. In addition, I not only became literate in tax codes, but I improved my skills in communication, planning, and leadership. After my first year as an intern, I knew I wanted to continue down this path. Now that I am ending my time in Students in VITA as a Co-Site Coordinator and pursuing a career in accounting, I look forward to helping the local community with our passionate and ambitious members.”

“At the beginning of my freshman year, I heard about VITA through a friend and I was instantly intrigued because I wanted to improve my professionalism while being able to connect with my community. During my time as a tax-preparing intern, I improved my communication skills while learning how to think quickly on my feet when working with clients. VITA has taught me a vast amount of knowledge that I will take with me throughout my college and professional career. I am very grateful for the connections and priceless experiences that I have gained through VITA. Before VITA, I was unsure if I wanted to continue a career in the business field. But, after finishing my first year of the internship, I continued my time with VITA as a Lead Intern and I realized that there was a lot of potential for me in this field. I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to be a part of VITA for my third year.”

“Being able to contribute back to the community which, we, UC Davis students are a part of is not only important but something we should strive to do more. This community allows us to have fantastic opportunities in both academics and our lives without which we would not be able to do as much as we are. Soon after joining VITA I learned the ropes quickly and found myself engaged in knowing as much as I could about the tax filing process in order to provide our clients with the best results. Despite our primary objective, we not only provide to our clients but to our interns as well. It is my goal to ensure our volunteers develop the fundamental skills working in a demanding professional environment to become the high caliber leaders of tomorrow. We look forward to providing you with exceptional tax preparation and filing services this year.”

“I decided to join VITA because it is a great way to help me explore a potential pathway in business and it provided opportunities that further develop my professional and leadership skills. I really liked the idea of how VITA is geared towards helping people learn how to become more financially stable, while providing them with the knowledge to effectively manage their money. VITA has provided me with new knowledge that can be potentially used in the future such as the different tax laws and how to work with a client efficiently to prepare their taxes I love how VITA is a great source to connect and learn with other interns who also have the same dedication and aspiration as me. It’s definitely a rewarding experience being able to work with different clients and finding the best ways to assist them. I am grateful for this organization and hope to continue to grow and give back.”

“During my first year in Davis, I fell in love with not only the school but with the community. Being a student at UC Davis is about much more than just an education and I owe the community for the wonderful experiences I have already had. When I heard about VITA and their positive impact on the community through community service, I lept at the opportunity to get involved. VITA provides volunteers with an incredible, unforgettable experience that offers valuable insight into the world of business and tax accounting. Through VITA, I have grown in my ability to communicate clearly and patiently, serve alongside fellow interns, and provide quality service. Being a part of VITA is much more than being a tax preparer, VITA provides the opportunity to become more involved in the Davis community and contribute to a significant cause!”

Carrie Cho

Co-Marketing Director

Fourth Year

“I joined Students In VITA with the intention of giving back to the community in a professional manner. This was the perfect opportunity for me to learn and improve my professional skills while serving the community. As a person who had zero knowledge about taxes, I’ve become confident in myself and the skills obtained through this internship. The workshops prepared me with tax knowledge and working with clients had its challenging moments, but it is truly a learning experience. The soft skills and professional skills I’ve gained are the biggest takeaway from this internship that I greatly appreciate. Working alongside my peers as a team has been a pleasure and I am excited and beyond grateful to have the opportunity to serve as one of the Marketing Directors this year.”

“I joined VITA to gain experience and to design for a cause that helps others. As someone who grew up in a low income household, I connected to VITA and its purpose. I entered the workforce with a limited knowledge about income taxes and how to file them, so I strongly relate to the people that VITA provides service to. I aim to help others throughout my design career, so this opportunity is providing me first-hand experience with that. Working with VITA allows me to practice my design skills in a collaborative environment and to serve my local community.”

“When I transferred to Davis last year, I was looking to get involved with the community in a meaningful way. When I heard about Students in VITA, I thought it would be a great way to learn about taxes and develop professional skills, while also providing an important service to local families. Although I knew nothing about taxes, VITA offered many resources through workshops, training, and mentoring to help interns feel confident with clients. It was a great experience to work with such awesome and diverse clients and peers and being part of this process helped me improve my communication and leadership skills. VITA has been a very fulfilling opportunity and I look forward to learning new things and continuing to serve our community.”

Curtis Garrett

Lead Intern

Fourth Year
Managerial Economics

“As a fourth year, I can look back and say with confidence that joining VITA has been one of the most impactful and positive decisions that I have made while at UC Davis. I initially joined the program during the third year of my time at Davis because I knew it would allow me to engage with and help the Yolo County community in a significant way. Having grown up in the inner city of Los Angeles, I have witnessed the financial struggles of families and know how important tax refunds are to allowing these families to stay financially afloat. This is why continuing to be a part of a free tax preparation program like VITA was so important to me. With each client we serve we allow them to keep more tax dollars, gain greater financial literacy, and ultimately build a more financially stable future. Thus, as I enter my second year in VITA and my first year on the VITA Board, I hope to continue to grow as an individual and help better the lives of families in the greater Sacramento Area.”

Hobbies/Interests: Fishing, snowboarding, basketball, skateboarding, traveling

Robyn Lam

“I initially joined VITA because I wanted to do something more practical with my interest in accounting, and I’m glad I made that decision a year back! Not only has VITA given me a chance to give back to the local community, but it also prepared me with the right skills to do well in the future. Throughout the internship, I gained valuable tax knowledge and learned how to communicate effectively with clients while maintaining professionalism, and a great part of this was thanks to the supportive network of peers that I’ve met in VITA. I’m happy to say that being a part of VITA has helped me solidify my career goals and assisted me in landing the job offer I wanted. I look forward to continuing volunteering next year and contribute to the community that has given me so much!

“When I was in my third year of college, I went with a friend to the Involvement Fair at UC Davis and was introduced to VITA by one of the interns. At the time, I developed an interest in accounting and wanted to know more about the tax field. Thereupon, as I learned more about VITA’s mission, I am convinced this internship is the right one for me. I am really happy to be apart of VITA because through VITA, I became more involved in the community and gained tax law knowledge at the same time. During my time here, I met many friends and clients who are always nice and patient. This will be my second year with the organization; I hope I will continue to make new friends, enhance my communication skills, and give back to the community.”

“The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Organization is a great organization that allows students to give their services to help and engage their local community by spending their free time filing our clients taxes for no charge. In VITA we work towards fulfilling our clients tax questions or needs, within the best our abilities, until the clients are satisfied. I chose to join this outstanding organization to gain professional experience in accounting, be involved at UC Davis, and meet amazing people.

Clarissa Yau

Lead Intern and Webmaster

Second Year
Applied Mathematics

“Prior to joining VITA in my freshman year, I had no knowledge about taxes and wasn’t sure about applying because unlike many of the others, I was not a Business or Economics major. However, I had interests in pursuing a career in the accounting field and thus stepped out of my comfort zone to become an intern. Throughout this experience, I was able to immensely improve my communication skills and professionalism with the clients that I had to interact with. Although I’ve only been a part of VITA for one year, I am excited to expand my horizons and to help other fellow interns discover their own passions whether it is related to taxes or not. I look forward to the upcoming year as I network and socialize with those around me!”

Hobbies/Interests: K-pop, going to concerts, traveling, hanging with friends, boba

Wendy Lee

Adviser

Fourth Year
Managerial Economics

“When I first entered college, I had no idea what major I wanted to pursue or what clubs I wanted to join. What I did know was that I wanted to have a positive impact to my community, so Students in VITA seemed like the perfect choice of extracurricular. This is now my fourth year with VITA and I have not regretted a single moment of it. Beyond serving as a tax resource to the community and the gratification that comes with it, I have also developed personally and professionally. VITA has challenged my problem-solving skills, refined my ability to work in teams and fostered technical skills I could not have learned anywhere else. But my greatest takeaway from this organization is beyond a doubt the people. VITA has exposed me to some of the most altruistic and driven individuals I have ever met and I look forward to seeing what new talent will be drawn in this year as well.”
